1. Topic Of Lesson Plan-
2. Lesson Content-
Partial Sums, Place Value, Extended Form |
3. Goals And Expectations-
1. Students will be able to identify the value of a digit in a given
Number.
2. Students will be able to Add to numbers using the partial sums
technique. |
4. Objectives-
1. Students will write numbers out in extended form to demonstrate
an understanding of value for each digit in a given number.
2. Students will use this knowledge to add numbers that have already
been broken up into extended form. |
5. Materials and Aids-
6. Methods Used and Procedures-
A. Introduction-
1. Suppose you were out shopping with no paper, pen or calculator
and needed to add two 2-digit numbers together, how would you do it?
2. Explain to students that it would be easier to do mentally using
a technique called partial sums.
B. Development-
1. Review expanded form with students.
2. Provide a 2-digit addition problem for students and ask them to
break each number into expanded form, then add the expanded for numbers.
3. Point out to students how much easier it is to add numbers that
are broken up into expanded form. This is called partial sums. |
C. Practice-
1. Provide examples of other 2-digit addition problems.
2. Ask students to come up and place each number in expanded form,
then add them.
3. Prompt students to think about how they might try this activity
mentally. |
D. Independent Practice-
1. Provide examples for students.
2. Allow students to work with partners and take turns solving problems
using partial sums. |
E. Accommodations For Students-
1. Remind students of the importance of writing each number out
in expanded form.
2. Remind students to count out and identify the place value of each
digit while writing numbers in expanded form. |
F. Checking for understanding-
1. Write problems on the board and allow students an opportunity
to answer them mentally using partial sums. |
G. Closure-
1. Remind students how helpful this strategy can be in real-life
situations, as well as helping them work faster and more efficient
on exams. |
7. Evaluation-
1. Content covered on test and quiz
